Vegan in Edinburgh: Part 2

Since writing my first post about where to find great vegan food in Edinburgh, the city has been through some fabulous cruelty-free changes. In 2016, Scotland’s capital city was named the UK’s Most Vegan-Friendly City, snatching the title from it’s long term Glaswegian rival.

With that in mind, I’ve pulled together a second list of places to get your little veggie loving taste buds going …

The Herbivore Kitchen

The Herbivore Kitchen, previously All About Patisserie, is located near the popular student area around The Meadows. About a 15 minute walk from the Royal Mile, it sets the vegan bar high; serving all kinds of creative milkshakes and mouth watering all-day pancakes. The Sgaia Streaky Bacon, Banana, Maple Syrup, Walnuts & Pecans on Pumpkin Pancakes are my personal favourite.

The Regent

At first glance, The Regent isn’t a a bar that would assume caters to vegans (although, what does a vegan bar look like?). The self-proclaimed real ale gay bar has all the feels on of a relaxed old-town bar; big comfy seats, brass coated bar, and real ales on tap. They delighted me with vegan hot-dogs and vegan chilli’s, all at ridiculously low prices given the central location. A great spot to visit for lunch after a leisurely stroll around Calton Hill.

Wagamama

The only nationwide chain restaurant to be included in this list, Wagamama have really gone out of their way to accommodate their growing vegan customer base. With two city centre locations to choose from, their full vegan menu is a convenient go to after a long day’s shopping on Princes Street. I love the St. Andrew’s Square branch for cocktails and nibbles.

Bluebird Cafe

The Bluebird Cafe may be small, but they are one of my favourites on this list. The little coffee house isn’t specifically vegan, but they make sure to give us loads of imaginative options to choose from; I’m still particularity excited about the vegan pulled pork cheesy nachos and the vegan french toast. If you’re paying a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens, be sure to drop in to the Bluebird Cafe for a spot of lunch afterwards.

Harmonium

vegan mac and cheese

I just can’t stop talking about Harmonium! Vegan Mac and Cheese, vegan pizzas, vegan haggis tacos, vegan Philly cheese steaks. Do I need to go on? The restaurant, owned by the same folks that brought Mono, Stereo and The flying Duck to Glasgow, finally made it across the M8 to bring their vegan genius to Edinburgh. Situated near Leith Shore, it’s a great alternative to all the fish based restaurants that the touristic area has to offer.

Great job Edinburgh! I can’t wait to see what else you’ll be bringing to the table (pardon the pun) in the near future.

Tried any of these places out? I’d love to hear what you thought of them?
